About the studio
Twelve square metres, one wheel, one kiln, and a window that faces the wrong way for morning light.
I started throwing eleven years ago in an evening class and kept at it longer than anyone expected, including me. The studio has been in its current form since the spring of the year I stopped renting shelf space from someone else.
Materials
A grogged stoneware for anything larger than a mug, a smoother body for cups, and a porcelain that I use sparingly because it punishes carelessness. Glazes are mixed here from dry materials. Wood ash comes from a neighbour's stove and is therefore never twice the same, which the journal complains about at length.
What is for sale
Mugs and small bowls, usually. Larger work exists but rarely survives in quantity. There is no shop on this site; the visit page explains how it actually works.
Why write any of this down
Because the alternative is learning the same lesson every eighteen months. The journal is the useful part of this site, if any of it is.
